Regaining trust and safety online with Emily Chao

“How can we regain our trust in the internet?” asks Emily. Reflecting upon their time as a trust and safety engineer during a politically turbulent time for the US, Emily combines research, policy overview, and on the ground experience, into a zine, to show us ways that engineers can advocate and shift norms around profit driven trust and safety measures.

Emily Chao (they/them) is a reformed Trust and Safety engineer now turned public interest and civic technologist, currently working on behavioral nudging tools to influence departments of corrections to move towards decarceration. They are currently also embarking on a series of critical writing projects to distill why Trust and Safety as an industry mechanism is not effective for protecting and reflecting community values online and how we may think outside of these structures for change.
